Get To Know Us: Q & A

We've gained some new faces, friends, and followers around here, so we thought it was prime time to do a Q&A of sorts so that you all can get to know us a little bit better than what our About page says! We've had a lot of people ask similar questions regarding our life, why we live in Budapest, how we met, why we got engaged 2 months after becoming "official", why we married four months after getting engaged, why did we pack up everything and leave America, and many, many other questions that we will try to answer right now! If we forget any other ones or you have a question for us, don't hesitate to comment on this blog post or head on over to our Contact page and send us your questions! Maybe we will do a Part Two!

Why did you move to Budapest?

There were lots of reasons why we moved to Budapest, most of them having to do with the fact that the Lord clearly pointed us in that direction by confirming the idea through people, circumstances, and a missions trip Johnny went on in November of 2015. Through all of that, God has developed a heart for Europeans in us and showing them who Jesus is. It's hard to communicate to people why they need Jesus when they have all their needs met. We've found out that we have to be willing to build relationships with people and gain their trust before even having an ounce of a right to speak into their lives, which is why more times than not short-term, one week missions trips over here aren't as effective as what they hope them to be, and it is why we decided to move over here.

How long will you be living there?

We will be in Budapest until December 5th, which means from the time we left Florida till the time we come back will be almost exactly 3 months. We decided one 3 months because that is how long we could live there on a tourist visa, so staying here for that long was as long as we legally could. We're looking forward to spending time with family and friends during the Christmas season, but we will definitely be missing all of our family and friends here in Budapest. We love life here so much... It honestly feels like home!

When you come back to Florida in December, are you going to get a job, move out of your parents spare bedroom, stay in America, etc.?

The short answer to all of those questions is this: We don't know! We don't know what God will want us to do. What we do know is that we are 100% confident that the mission field is where He wants us during this season of our life, so we have no plans to get jobs, move out of the spare bedroom in Johnny's parents home, or even stay in America unless He obviously calls us to do so. We have faith and know that He will provide a way for us to stay in the mission field, but we have no idea how it will happen or when, so right now we are remaining wide-open to listen to His voice.

How did your family + friends react when you told them you were going to move overseas and become missionaries?

We are so blessed with extremely supportive family + friends who love the fact that we are following God's call in our lives to become missionaries! Of course, there were tears when we left and it's hard being so far away from a place we have called "home" for so long, but living in God's will makes everything so worth it. Plus, the Lord has blessed us with friends in Hungary that have made the transition here a lot easier to deal with. We are so thankful!

What kind of camera equipment do you use?

We use all kinds! We use a Canon 5DMiii for photography & professional videography. With that camera we are either using a 50mm 1.4 lens or an 85 1.8 lens. For vlogging, we use the Canon M5 with the 15 - 35mm lens. We also have a backup Canon T3i just in case something fails us.

How did you two meet?

We met at the first college Sunday night event at our church. We were 18 & 22 and one of the pastors introduced us by saying "Hey, Sam! You're a photographer, Johnny's a videographer, you two should talk about lenses and stuff!". We talked about our favorite camera gear and then that night we both ended up getting invited separately to hang out with three other friends at Starbucks. I (Sam) remember catching Johnny making eye contact with me several times that night but I didn't think anything of it. After that night we started hanging out a lot... But that's a story for a different time!

Why did you get married so quick & young?

We got married at 19 & 23 on September 23rd, 2016. It was a warm autumn day, and despite the mosquitoes that kept getting caught in the tulle of dresses and the sweat beads on everyone's forehead, it was simply perfect. We can't tell you exactly why we got married "so quick & young", mainly because everything just felt right and natural and we prayed a lot about each step. We spent an evening (about a week before we became "official") talking about what a relationship between us would look like and we told each other that if we were going to do this, we were going to do it right and with the intent to marry each other. We weren't going to go into it with the mindset of having a boyfriend/girlfriend just to have one or just to have something to do on a Friday night. We decided that wasn't for us and that this was for real.

So maybe that is why we got married so young & quick, but we are very confident that it was exactly what God wanted us to do, and because of that, we have been able to see the fruits of our labor and the blessings God has poured out on us.

What is your favorite movie?

Johnny: The Count of Monte Cristo

Sam: About Time

What is your favorite kind of music // artist?

That's like picking our favorite child! It's kind of impossible to nail down just one type of music or just one artist. There are so many good kinds of music and so many good artists! We listen to all kinds of music, but the kind we listen to the most is mainly indie + folk. But not like, banjo strummin', knee slappin', voice yodelin' type of folk... think The Oh Hellos, James Vincent McMorrow, and Ben Howard kind of folk. We definitely listen to those artists the most. And pretty much anything by Bethel is guaranteed to be on our playlist.
